Guidance Corner with Mrs. McAllister – Apr. 2012

April 1, 2012

Junior High Options:
For the final quarter of Junior High options, class lists will be set prior to the start of the fourth quarter. This means that the last day to request option changes is Friday, April 13th, forms are available online and at the College Office. The last day for Quarter 3 options is Friday, April 20th with Quarter 4 options to start the following week.

Senior High Course Registration:
Students entering Grades 10 to 12 in the fall will complete a course registration form after spring break.  Parent information sessions will be held to review course planning for high school with a focus on Grade 10.  Individual appointments can also be booked with Mrs. McAllister by contacting susan.mcallister@masters.ab.ca if you have further questions about course selection.

University Entrance Requirements: five 30-level courses, which must include English 30-1 and at most one option course.  Students should plan to have a minimum of seven 30-level courses to allow for various entrance requirements and flexibility in building their admission average.

Grade 12:
Applications for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship will be completed during advisory.  Grades are accessed through Apply Alberta so the form is all that needs to be submitted; no transcript is required.  Typically Master’s graduates qualify for over $50,000 annually just from this scholarship so it’s important to be sure it is submitted.

Semester One Diploma Results:
The detailed reports that allow us to compare to provincial averages was released recently.  Congratulations to all students who participated in 30-level courses for their fine effort and achievement on these exams!  All Master’s College students achieved at least the Acceptable Standard (50%) on all exams.  Provincially this average is in the high 80’s to mid 90’s.  Master’s College exceeded the provincial average for the Excellence Standard (80%) by 7% to 21% depending on the subject being tested.
